Some cakes whisper. This one glows.

Under the calm cream and falling petals, there is a whole weather system: bright lemon curd like late afternoon sun, deep blueberry folded through the layers, soft vanilla holding it all together. Cut it open and the inside does the talking, sunshine in stripes.

I love a cake that keeps a secret. From the outside, pure elegance. From the inside, pure joy. That is exactly how the best things in life are built.

Before he has a name everyone agrees on, before his first anything, a little boy was already being celebrated, and I got to bake the centerpiece. Deep whisky chocolate, soft coconut cream, dressed in baby blue and gold, with one small bear standing guard.

Baking for a baby shower is baking for a beginning. Every layer is a wish: may you be loved, may you be brave, may life be sweet. Welcome to the world, little one. Your cake is ready.
